(Washington DC) — Gulf states, including Texas, are watching closely as lawmakers in Washington wrangle over funding a response to the Zika virus.
Senate Democrats blocked a Zika bill yesterday, saying it contained “poison pill” GOP riders that would defund Planned Parenthood and allow Confederate flags to be flown at Veterans Administration cemeteries.
Zika response money is needed desperately in Houston, Miami and other southern cities where mosquitoes have carried or might carry the virus.
It’s hoped Congress will pass the necessary federal funding, before adjourning for the upcoming general election.
