(Port of Houston, TX) — The U.S. Coast Guard and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating yesterday’s fuel spill and fire that closed the Houston Ship Channel for fifteen hours.
Up to 90-thousand gallons of light fuel oil spilled from a departing tanker and burned only a few hundred yards from Battleship Texas and the San Jacinto State Park.
One state official said “it was just incredible that there was no loss of life.” All crew members aboard the Aframax River were evacuated safely. Flames from the fire shot as high as 200 feet into the air.
