(TUCSON) — Parts of the Southwest are bracing for stormy weather as what was once Hurricane Newton approaches.
The system has since been downgraded to a tropical storm since making landfall in mainland Mexico.
As a hurricane, Newton slammed Mexico’s Baja California peninsula yesterday, dumping heavy rain and leaving at least two dead. Three others are missing.
The Category One hurricane crushed Cabo San Lucas and continues to head north, now carrying maximum sustained winds of 70 miles-per-hour.
Newton is expected to move into southeastern Arizona this afternoon and bring rain to New Mexico as well. It should dissipate by early tomorrow.
