(Brownsville, TX) — An ad hoc committee is denouncing a proposed Mexican-American studies textbook, describing it as “dripping with racism.”
The panel of educators and students is calling on the State Board of Education to reject the proposed text and will present its findings to the board next week at a public hearing in Austin.
At a news conference yesterday in Brownsville, Board member Ruben Cortez Jr. said the book describes Mexicans as “lazy… compared to European or American workers.” He says the text also described a tradition by Mexican workers to take Mondays off and to drink on the job.
