(Nice, France) — Two Americans are among the more than 80 people dead in what’s being called a terrorist attack in Nice, France Thursday. Fifty-one-year-old Sean Copeland and his 11-year-old son Brodie, who are from the Austin, Texas area, were on vacation in the French Riviera when the attack occurred. The Copelands were in a crowd of people watching fireworks on Bastille Day when a man plowed a truck into the crowd killing 84 people and injuring dozens more, 18 of them seriously.
Vice President Joe Biden issued a statement saying the U.S. Embassy in Paris is making every effort to account for the welfare of U.S. citizens in Nice. Biden said Americans in Nice should contact friends and family directly to inform them of their well being. President Obama condemned the attack as “horrific,” and said Americans stand in solidarity with the people of France.
French President Francois Hollande said the massacre was “undeniably” a terrorist attack. The driver of the truck was shot dead by police. Sources say identification papers found on the driver’s body indicate that he was a 31-year-old resident of Nice who was born in Tunisia. Guns, grenades and other weapons were found in the back of the truck.
