A police chase this morning near the Texas Tech campus resulted in the suspect crashing his car into a utility pole near 19th and University avenue. The chase and subsequent crash occurred around 8:20 this morning.
Live power lines fell onto the car after the crash, setting it on fire, but the suspect was rescued before the car was fully engulfed. Firefighters responding to the scene had to wait for Lubbock Power & Light workers to disable the power line before the fire could be extinguished. This caused a power outage in the immediate vicinity.
The KTTZ-FM studios are located in the Texas Tech Plaza building across the street from where the accident occurred, and the power outage knocked the NPR station off-air for about 2 and a half hours. The power outage also affected programming on 88.1 KTXT-FM, Texas Tech’s student radio station. The student FM lost its BBC feed from KTTZ-FM when the power went out. Several businesses and homes in the area were affected by the blackout as well.
