(Washington, DC) — The Obama administration is asking the U.S. Supreme Court to reconsider the President’s executive actions on immigration. The high court deadlocked 4-4 on the legality of the actions. A lower court order that froze the actions remains in place. The Justice Department asked the Supreme Court to reconsider the case once a ninth justice is confirmed. Justice Antonin Scalia died in February. Senate Republican leaders have refused to consider President Obama’s nomination of Merrick Garland to replace Scalia. Garland is a veteran federal appeals court judge.
The President’s executive actions aimed to shield millions of undocumented immigrants from the threat of deportation. Obama argued that he was forced to take the actions because of congressional inaction on immigration reform.
