Mayor Confirms 7th Death In Train Derailment

AmtrakPhiladelphia Mayor Michael Nutter is confirming a seventh person has died from last night’s Amtrak train derailment.  At an afternoon press briefing, Nutter said the process of notifying the victims’ families has begun.  He said the search operation at the crash site continues.

Over 200 people were injured when the train derailed while on a curved section of track.  The mayor would not confirm reports the train was traveling at more than 100 miles-per-hour when it jumped the tracks.

Nutter also corrected his earlier statement saying the engineer was injured and not the conductor.  He also said the engineer had given a statement to police.

There were earlier reports the engineer was not cooperating with investigators.

Federal investigators say the Amtrak train was traveling over 100 miles-per-hour before it jumped the tracks.  This would be more than twice the speed limit for the stretch of track where the accident occurred. The NTSB said more information will be given at a press conference later today.
