Oil prices drop puts a spike in layoffs

The drop in crude oil prices is leading to deep cuts in oil industry jobs.  Layoffs are nearing the 100-thousand mark and more are in the pipeline.

The heaviest losses are in the oil-producing states of Louisiana, Oklahoma, North Dakota and Texas.  Oil prices are down 55-percent since last June and industry layoffs began in December.

The job cuts are across a broad swath of the industry, from oilfield exploration and production, to services companies, and manufacturers that supply the industry, such as U.S. Steel.
