A bill banning texting while driving is now headed to the Texas Senate.
The House voted 102-40 yesterday in favor of HB 80 which makes it a misdemeanor to text while behind the wheel. It exempts law enforcement, as long as they’re acting in official capacity.
Supporters believe it will make the roads safer. Opponents say it infringes on the liberty of drivers and banning texting could cause drivers to lower their phones further from eye level to avoid detection.
The legislature passed a texting while driving ban in 2013, which was vetoed by then-Governor Rick Perry.
