LUBBOCK – According to the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, Texas Tech wide receiver Jakeem Grant was hospitalized Saturday night after an altercation resulted in gun shots and a laceration that was ruled as a possible stabbing.
Lt. Bryan Taylor of the Lubbock County Sherrif’s office said about 20 rounds were fired around 1:30 a.m. at El Fronterizo, a party rental facility, the paper reports. Grant was taken to the hospital with a laceration and released Sunday. No one has been arrested in the incident.
Blayne Beal, Associate Athletic Director and spokesman for Tech Athletics said they are aware of the incident and that Grant is doing well after being released.
The incident comes off Tech’s win against Kansas earlier Saturday, 31-24. Grant played in the game, acquiring 72 yards in six catches. The game served as Tech’s Homecoming game, and the first Big 12 conference win of the season for the Red Raiders, who are now 3-4.
Tech officials say they are investigating the incident. They are not yet sure if the injury will affect Grant’s role with the team. Grant is Tech’s leading receiver this season, with 50 catches for 629 yards and five touchdowns.
Coach Kliff Kingsbury has yet to comment.
