Texas Tech volleyball player Rachel Brummitt was named the Big 12 Defensive player of the week, the second straight player-of-the-week award for a Tech volleyball team who is 6-0 on the season. This is the fourth defensive player of the week award for Brummitt. Tech opens their home schedule on Thursday against Incarnate Word at 6 p.m.

June Jones, head football coach of the SMU Mustangs, has resigned from the team, ESPN Dallas reports. Citing personal issues as the reason, Jones released a statement through the university in which he thanked them for their support. Jones coached the Mustangs for seven seasons, leading them to two Conference USA titles and four bowl appearances.

The 49ers forced four turnovers and rolled the Cowboys 28-17 in Week One from AT&T Stadium. Tony Romo threw three interceptions and a touchdown in the loss. DeMarco Murray rushed for 118 yards and a score while Terrance Williams caught the lone touchdown pass. Dallas will take another shot at getting its first win of the season at the Titans on Sunday. Also, Jerry Jones will not face tampering charges according to ESPN, for a conversation he had with Vikings running back Adrian Peterson.

The Baltimore Ravens have terminated the contract of running back Ray Rice and the NFL has announced that Rice’s previous two-game suspension for punching his now-wife in an Atlantic City casino would be indefinite TMZ.com released video of the actual incident on Monday that showed Rice throwing a left-handed punch at then-fiancée Janay Palmer and knocking her out cold at the Revel Casino back in February. Surveillance video originally released by the celebrity gossip website only revealed the aftermath of the incident, with Rice dragging Palmer out of the elevator. NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said in a statement Monday that the league did not have prior access to this video when it initially suspended Rice, which drew a public backlash for its short length and prompted the league to amend its policy on domestic violence.
