LUBBOCK – I’m Ciara Gaines with your KTXT Sports Update for September 4.

Michael Sam has found a home in the NFL, as the rookie defensive end joined the Dallas Cowboys’ practice squad on Wednesday. Sam, the NFL’s first openly gay active player, was cut by the St. Louis Rams over the weekend and was not claimed on waivers. Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said it was purely a football decision and said the practice squad player’s role is “a great opportunity for us to develop and evaluate personnel.” Sam was selected by St. Louis with a seventh-round draft pick in May.

Former Red Raider and current Denver Broncos wide receiver Wes Welker will miss the first four games of the season after being suspended on Tuesday for violating the NFL’s policy on performance enhancing substances. Reports indicated that Welker tested positive for amphetamines and unsuccessfully appealed the penalty. He denied using any such substances and told a Denver newspaper the drug procedures are “clearly flawed.” The five-time Pro Bowl selection, who is recovering from a concussion suffered in the preseason, will be eligible to return after Denver’s Week 5 tilt against Arizona on Oct. 5 because the Broncos are on a bye the previous week.

Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt is getting his wish. The team signed the two-time Pro Bowler to a long-term deal that will keep him in Houston through the 2021 season.  The “Houston Chronicle” reports the contract is worth 100-million-dollars over six years with nearly 52-million guaranteed. The 25-year-old was taken 11th overall by the Texans in the 2011 draft and has racked up 36-and-a-half sacks during his tenure.

And finally, Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay was suspended six games and fined $500,000 Tuesday by the NFL after he pleaded guilty in Indiana to a misdemeanor charge of impaired driving. The NFL issued its punishment under the league’s personal conduct policy with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell saying in a letter to Irsay that “owners, management personnel and coaches must be held to a higher standard than players.”
