I’m Ciara Gaines with your KTXT Sports Update for August 29.

The Cowboys defense took another hit Thursday. The NFL suspended defensive back Jakar Hamilton for four games for violating league rules on substance abuse. His suspension comes a few weeks after cornerback Orlando Scandrick was suspended four games for violating league rules on performance-enhancing drugs. Because of the suspensions of Scandrick and Hamilton, the Cowboys must pay a fine of $44,000, a combined portion each player’s salary. Dallas opens the season September 7 versus the San Francisco 49ers.

The NFL says players will be subject to a six-week suspension for a first domestic violence offense and a lifetime ban for a second one in a revamped policy announced in a letter from commissioner Roger Goodell to team owners. A copy of the letter was obtained Thursday by SportsNetwork.com. In it, Goodell says he “didn’t get it right” last month when he suspended Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice for two games over Rice’s offseason arrest on assault charges following an altercation with his then-fiancée in an Atlantic City casino.

After missing the last three NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races, Tony Stewart is expected to return to competition this weekend at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Stewart, a three-time champion in  NASCAR’s premier series, skipped Watkins Glen, Michigan and Bristol while he was in seclusion following his involvement in a fatal accident on August 9. He struck and killed Kevin Ward Jr. during a sprint car race. Currently, there are no criminal charges pending against Stewart. The investigation regarding Ward’s death is still ongoing.
