Former Texas Tech football player Nigel Bethel will not face felony assault charges after allegedly hitting Lady Raider basketball player Amber Battle in the face during an incident at the recreation center on June 28.
Bethel, an incoming freshman, and Battle, a senior, were playing a pickup basketball game at the rec when a confrontation between the two occurred, reportedly leaving Battle with a broken bone in her jaw.
Battle later admitted to initiating the first contact. According to Bethel’s Twitter page, he would like to be reinstated into the Tech football program after being dismissed a day after the incident occurred.
Battle was suspended from all competition for the month of November.
The Dallas Morning News reported that Tech Athletics spokesman Blayne Beal said to them in an email Tuesday night that Tech stands by its zero tolerance policy and its original statement.
The university released video from the incident July 16.
