Texas Tech’s Free Market Institute to Host
Nationally Syndicated Columnist Walter E. Williams

As part of a free public lecture series, organizers at Texas Tech University’s Free Market Institute will have conservative newspaper columnist Walter E. Williams speak from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Sept. 19 at the Allen Theatre in Texas Tech’s Student Union Building (SUB).

Williams, who also is the John M. Olin Distinguished Professor of Economics at George Mason University, will deliver the keynote speech, The Role of Government in a Free Society.

“Dr. Williams is a world-famous economist and champion of free-enterprise economics,” said Benjamin Powell, director of the Free Market Institute. “He’s very well received by this community, also. I bet I was asked here in Lubbock about a dozen times if I knew Walter Williams, since I went to graduate school at George Mason. I decided I’d better get him here. He’s quite a character, and I’m sure he’ll put on a great show.”

Williams writes a weekly nationally syndicated newspaper column that appears every Monday in the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal and about 140 newspapers nationwide. He is the author of more than 150 publications for scholarly journals and 10 books.

From 4:45 to 5:15 p.m., the public also can attend a book-signing event of his most recent books; “Race and Discrimination: How Much Can Be Blamed on Discrimination,” “Up from the Projects: An Autobiography,” and “Liberty Versus the Tyranny of Socialism: Controversial Essays.” This will be held in the courtyard of the SUB.

The event is free and open to the public. Park and Pay spaces are available in the R-11 Band Lot on the south side of the SUB, the R-3 lot on the west side of the Band Lot and the Fourth Floor of the Flint Avenue Parking Garage, located at 18th Street and Flint Avenue.
