LUBBOCK – The Texas Tech soccer team wrapped up the weekend with a 3-1 win over the Cal State Northridge Matadors at the John B. Walker Soccer Complex Sunday.
The Red Raiders finished the weekend perfect after beating Cal State Fullerton 1-0 Friday night.
Tech improved its record to 5-1-0. Sophomore forward Janine Beckie, who started off with an early goal at 2:06 in the first half, said she feels optimistic about the season with the games played so far.
“If we look at these good six games,” Beckie said. “We’re really excited about the season.”
The next goal was scored by sophomore forward Briana Rohmer at 38:35 in the first half off her head from a double assist in the corner from Caity Heap.
“I’m very excited,” Rohmer said, “I scored my very first goal of the season. It kind of just came to me. It hit me in the face and it went in.”
The final goal was scored by Heap in the box off a nice pass from Paige Strahan just over 60 minutes into the game.
After blowing a 2-0 halftime lead Sept. 1 against Long Beach State, Tech Head Coach Tom Stone said the team knew what to do in the second half of this game with the same lead.
“All we need to do is think back a week ago,” Stone said. “And remind themselves that no lead is safe until the refs blow that final whistle.”
Tech controlled the ball for a majority of the game, which Beckie said is very important in order for the team to be successful.
“It’s very important,” Beckie said. “Definitely against a team like that who likes to look to play over the top and run over the ball, so it’s kind of hard to control the ball in a game like that.”
Cal State Northridge (1-5-0) scored its lone goal at 63:17 by Hannah Wissler off a free kick by Chloe McDaniel.
Tech will go on the road for about a month starting with a tournament in Arizona. The Red Raiders will return to the John B. Walker Soccer Complex Oct. 4 when TCU comes to Lubbock.
