LUBBOCK: The Texas Tech soccer team defeated the Cal State Fullerton Titans 1-0 Friday night at the John B. Walker Soccer Complex.
The Red Raiders pressured the Titans early. In the scoreless first half, Texas Tech had the advantage in corner kicks and shots on goal each being 3-1.
Tech continued their tense play after halftime, nearly scoring in the first minute of the second half. Kansas Bayly’s shot on goal however was saved by Cal State’s goalkeeper, Lindsey Maricic. At the 61:28 minute mark, Hayley Haagsma scored on a rebound from Caity Heap giving the Red Raiders a 1-0 lead.
“It was awesome to do that for my team,” Haagsma said. “It took the whole team to get down there and get that foul. It was a perfect pass by (Caity) Heap.”
Despite a couple of yellow cards from Head Coach Tom Stone and Caity Heap, Stone believed that their reason for victory came from playing collected.
“I just think that we were more relaxed,” Stone said. “We talked this week about when your team is as talented as this one they need to enjoy playing. It doesn’t need to feel like a chore.”
Texas Tech Soccer advances to 4-1 while Cal State Fullerton falls to 2-2-1. The Red Raiders will play host to Cal State Northridge on Sunday at 1 p.m. You can hear it live on KTXT The Raider 88.1.
Texas Tech Head Coach Tom Stone said the Red Raiders played like themselves Friday night.
“Tonight we really played our brand of soccer,” Stone said. “And this was a classic Friday night for Red Raider Soccer.”
