LUBBOCK-The Texas Tech Red Raiders (3-0(1-0)) upset the No. 24 TCU Horned Frogs (1-2(0-1)) 20-10 at Jones AT&T Stadium Thursday night.
True freshman quarterback Davis Webb threw a pass to junior wide receiver Bradley Marquez in the back corner of the end zone with 3:48 remaining to take a 17-10 lead. Junior kicker Ryan Bustin added a field goal with 2:43 remaining to all but seal the deal.
Marquez took us inside the play and described what happened.
“Just had a go called, and was able to get a beat on them and keep them on my back shoulder,” Marquez said. “Just a beautiful ball by Davis Webb, and those kind of balls you don’t drop.”
Marquez ended the night with three receptions for 35 yards and a touchdown.
Webb did not start the game, but came in after walk-on true freshman Baker Mayfield limped off the field. Webb’s first play was a 10 yard completion to Jace Amaro which sparked the Red Raider offense to score the game winning touchdown.
Tech’s defense kept TCU sophomore quarterback Trevone Boykin from scoring and recorded a first half shutout for the first time since 2009.
Kingsbury said it was the best defensive performance he has been a part of.
“It was the best defensive performance I’ve been a part of since I’ve been a coach,” Kingsbury said. “We put them in bad spots all night offensively, and they kept stepping up and turning them over and getting stops against a talented offense with a really talented quarterback.”
Boykin finished 23-36 with 194 yards and two interceptions. Sophomore runningback B.J. Catalon scored the lone touchdown for the Horned Frogs. The touchdown, which came with 6:28 remaining tied the game up.
The crowd may have played a factor in the game. A blackout was scheduled and the fans did not disappoint. A new student attendance record was set for the second straight week with 16,092.
The Red Raiders put their unbeaten record on the line September 21 when Texas State enters Jones AT&T Stadium.
