DALLAS – Governor Rick Perry today slammed pro-choice protesters and a state senator who this week killed the bill with new abortion restrictions. Perry spoke at the National Right to Life convention in Dallas.
At the Right To Life Convention, Governor Perry found a receptive audience as he called the Tuesday night protesters a mob, and blamed their unruly behavior for his needing to call another special session to vote on abortion.
RICK PERRY: “What we witnessed Tuesday was nothing more than the highjacking of the Democratic process. And this is simply too important a cuase to allow unruly actions of a few to stand in its way.”
Perry is asking lawmakers returning Monday to again pass a ban on abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy. The Governor also took a swipe at state Sentaor Wendy Davis, who filibustered the bill saying it’s unfortunate she didn’t learn from her own experience as a single teenage mother, that even children in difficult circumstances can succeed.
PERRY: “I’m proud that she has been able to take advanatage of her intellect and her hard work, that she didn’t come from particularly good circumstances. What if her mom had said, ‘you know, I just can’t do this- I don’t want to do this’?”
Senator Davis responded by saying “the governor’s statement is without diginity and tarnishes the high office he holds.”
Davis has left open the possibility she might run for governor next year. Perry again today was unwilling to say whether he will run for a fourth consecutive term.
