Planting Tradition
Texas Tech celebrates Strive for Honor Week, Sustainability Week and Arbor Day.
Texas Tech University will continue its annual celebration of sustainability and community with Arbor Day April 26.
The event is a partnership among Student Union & Activities, Hospitality Services, the Center for Campus Life, Tech Activities Board, Grounds Maintenance and the Texas Tech Ethics Center.
“Arbor Day is a great opportunity for Red Raiders to come together to beautify the campus and understand the importance of service while building a sense of community,” said Jon Mark Bernal, associate director for Student Union & Activities. “It allows for students, faculty, staff and alumni to celebrate in a fun way by enjoying music, food and planting right in the heart of campus.”
Arbor Day features Texas Tech students, faculty and staff helping to beautify the campus and highlight student organizations. The event kicks off at 11 a.m. at Memorial Circle. Live music by This Century will begin at 11:30 a.m. and the student organization awards begin at 12:50 p.m., presented by the 2012 Homecoming King and Queen. Planting begins at 1:20 p.m. and continues until 3 p.m.
Leading up to the event, Texas Tech Hospitality Services is hosting Sustainability Week and the Center for Campus Life, Staff Senate, Student Government Association, Student Union & Activities and the Ethics Center are hosting Strive for Honor Week.
Sustainability Week spreads awareness about the importance of sustainability living on the Texas Tech campus by offering several opportunities for students to participate in sustainable activities. Strive for Honor Week includes ethics demonstrations, documentaries and lectures designed to encourage students to act with integrity, show sportsmanship, help each other and live the values of Texas Tech.
Texas Tech is making strides in sustainability by creating LEED-certified buildings and participating in events such as RecyleMania. The week’s many events are inspired by Texas Tech’s commitment to preparing learners to be ethical leaders.
