LUBBOCK – A Texas Tech University student won first place in the chess master section of the California Class Championship.
Faik Aleskerov won the title of International Master in Santa Clara over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, a title which will be officially confirmed by the World Chess Federation in January.
Aleskerov is a member of the highly regarded Texas Tech Chess A-team, which reigns as the top intercollegiate champion team in the nation.
Aleskerov defeated two-dozen competitors for the title, including six-time U.S. Champion Walter Browne. Aleskerov says he will now pursue Grandmaster status, the highest ranking in chess.
