LUBBOCK – Members of Texas Tech’s Goin’ Band from Raiderland kicked-off Friday’s press conference as Texas Tech Athletic Director Kirby Hocutt and new Head Football Coach Kliff Kingsbury stepped onto the stage. It was the first formal introduction of the new Head Coach to the public.
Hocutt had only glowing remarks to share about the return of a Tech alum to the helm of the University’s football program.
HOCUTT: “We bring somebody who knows Texas Tech, who wants to be at Texas Tech, wants to live in West Texas, somebody who’s competed at the highest levels- he has a Super Bowl ring… ”
Kingsbury was excited and energetic about returning home to Texas Tech. He has spent the last year at Texas A&M, where he had major success as the Offensive Coordinator, helping the Aggies break SEC records while posting 10 wins for the first time since 1998.
KINGSBURY: “When I got into coaching, I went to the University of Houston. That was a business decision. When I went to that other university, that was definitely a business decision. But being here now, this is personal to me, this is where I want to be…”
Kingsbury played for Tech under former head coach Mike Leach, and he said he looks forward to being back in Jones AT&T Stadium. He is the youngest head coach in the BCS at 33 years-old. When asked about how he planned to fix the program at Texas Tech…
KINGSBURY: “I do know it’s a situation that’s not broken. You know, as a 7 and 5 team, it could have been easily 10 and 2, 11 and 1, so I’m excited about it. There’s tons of talent there, and I look forward to great things next year…”
Kingsbury only made one request of Hocutt-
KINGSBURY: “One last request I have for Kirby is, I was going to see if there was any way possible we could get Cincinnati on the schedule next year…”
In an exclusive interview with KTXT, Hocutt responded to that request.
HOCUTT: “The invitation is extended.”
