The Texas Tech Red Raiders dismantled the Lobos in front of a home crowd of 58, 955 Saturday night in a 49-14 beat down of New Mexico.
This drubbing reminded everyone of last season when Tech went into Albuquerque and beat the Lobos 59-13.
Senior quarterback Seth Doege took care of business again as he tossed a career-high 6 touchdowns and went 27-of-35 for 340 yards.
“I’m really proud of him, he’s matured,” head coach Tommy Tuberville said. “He’s a tremendous leader and the players respect him.”
Doege had a fantastic night through the air, spreading the ball to 13 different players, marking the third-straight game that Tech has had more than 10 different players making catches.
“We have a lot of depth and a lot of weapons,” Doege said. “They do a great job of preparing.”
The receiving core had a great night most notably, junior Eric Ward, who ended the night with 90 yards receiving and 3 touchdowns.
Became the first wide receiver to register three touchdowns in a half since Michael Crabtree did so in 2007 against Oklahoma State.
Ward missed last week’s game against Texas State because of a concussion, but bounced back with a Biletnikoff award-like performance.
Tight end Jace Amaro shined in the red zone as well, pulling in 2 touchdowns. The Red Raiders finished with 702 total yards, 377 through the air and 325 on the ground for a balanced attack.
New Mexico (1-2) struggled on offense and alternated their quarterbacks throughout the game but finished with just 127 yards of offense.
The Red Raiders have a long time to prepare as they look forward in their season.
Texas Tech’s next game is at Iowa State on September 29th.
“It’s not even Iowa State, it’s the fact that we’re going into Big 12 Conference play,” Doege said. “I think the guys are very motivated. We’ve been talking about it through the spring and summer and now fall that our main goal is to win a Big 12 Championship.
“The season starts two weeks from now, so it’s definitely something that we need to get prepared for.”
