Fifty-seven seconds.
That’s how long it took freshman Janine Beckie to net the first goal of her Texas Tech career and live up to the hype that had surrounded the 2012 Gatorade Colorado Player of the Year in the offseason.
Her goal was one of two for the Red Raiders (1-0) in their season-opening 2-1 victory against the Idaho Vandals on Friday night at the John B. Walker Soccer Complex.
After the early score, the Red Raiders and Vandals (0-1) traded possessions and shots on goal, but it was in the 78th minute when the tone of the game changed from holding on to win, to trying to regain the lead for the Red Raiders.
Idaho’s Chlesie Breen fired the equalizer past Victoria Esson (1-0), but only four minutes later the Red Raiders answered.
Sophomore Paige Strahan delivered for Tech with the game-winning goal from 18-yards out as she put it past a leaping Liz Boyden (0-1) to give Tech the 2-1 lead and the eventual win.
The Red Raiders outshot the Vandals 22-8 in the game, with eight coming from Beckie, and 10 were on goal.
Tech is back on the pitch on Sunday to take on New Mexico, with first kick set for noon at the John B. Walker Soccer Complex.
