Texas Tech announced an addition to 2024’s homecoming festivities, a concert in Urbanovsky Park headlined by Texas country trio Midland.
Yes, a concert in Urbanovsky Park is actually happening, we’re not pulling another April Fools’ prank on you.
In a statement, Texas Tech announced:
“Texas Tech University will add to its list of homecoming weekend activities with the launch of a comprehensive campaign, designed to chart the university’s path forward as it enters its second century. Red Raiders of all ages, including students, alumni, faculty, and staff are invited to this free event that will immediately follow the conclusion of the homecoming pep rally and bonfire.”
The approximate start time for the evening will be 8:30 PM. Niko Moon will open the show before Midland shuts it down.
For a homecoming show, I think Midland is a solid pick for a headliner. They’re always a ton of fun live and have a solid catalog of hits and sing-alongs. Also, I always forget how popular they are. They will likely draw a huge crowd, especially for a free show, and given it’s Lubbock, Texas, a country show will be a hit.
On top of that, they have a brand new album, Barely Blue, out September 20th. It’s one that I’m highly anticipating given the production being handled by Dave Cobb and the teaser tracks, Lucky Sometimes and Old Fashioned Feeling, being really darn good.
On the other hand, I do feel slightly bummed out by Niko Moon being picked as the opening act. It’s nothing about the quality of his music and I’m sure he’ll also be a ton of fun live, I just can’t help but wish that a Lubbock or West Texas artist could’ve filled that slot instead. Whether it’s an established fixture in the scene, like Grady Spencer & the Work, Josh Abbott Band, Randall King, or William Clark Green, or newcomers like Dylan Gossett, Hudson Westbrook, or Haydon Wiginton. (Well, actually, Haydon might have other priorities.) Of course, this is just me and my personal opinion, and nothing rules out another addition to the lineup, but one of the artists listed above would go a long way.
However, as someone who’s been wishing Urbanovsky Park could be used for a concert for the past four years, I am a beggar who won’t be a chooser.
Here are some more details:
- The concert will happen on October 18.
- The show is free, no tickets or prior RSVPs are required.
- A clear bag policy will be in effect, all bags are subject to search.
- There will be a handful of food trucks along 18th Street near the stage area with food available for purchase.
- It will be a certified great time.
