Album Review: Apartment Life by Ivy

Apartment Life is the quintessential 90’s indie pop album that was unfortunately missed by the majority. The album is filled with light and groovy guitar layered with introspective lyrics about heartbreak and severance. In honor of its 25-year anniversary and the recent passing of the award-winning Adam Schlesinger the group is re-releasing this album with their new record label Bar/None Records. Unlike its first release in ‘97, the album is accompanied by the addition of 2 previously unreleased songs. Not to mention the stripped Apartment Life demos will also be released on vinyl for National Record Day (April 22).

The album is a cohesive and captivating collection of songs that transport you back to the 90s. Lead singer Dominique Durand’s smooth and airy vocals mixed with her subtle french accent create such a unique sound. In contradiction to the sound, the lyrics tell a vulnerable story that was written by all three of the members. The band has a close dynamic that can be heard through their music, because of how in synch they are with one another. As you’re defrosting from the winter and amping up for the summer, Apartment Life is the perfect soundtrack for a chill spring day.
