As a person who tries to listen to all different kinds of music, hearing Alex G was a first for me. Before listening to “God Save the Animals” I knew nothing about Alex G and I wasn’t sure of what to expect. I have to say after hearing this album, I’ve added him to my library.
This album has a mixture of acoustic songs and that classic lo-fi pop sound Alex G is known for. “After All” was a song that really stuck with me after listening to it. It gives such a classic feeling with the acoustic guitar, bongos, and a melancholy voice that leads the song.
Then there are two songs “Blessing” and “Headroom Piano” which are both favorites of mine on the album. “Blessing” gives a taste of Alex G rock side to this record. With some hard riffs towards the beginning, then a driving beat throughout the song. Then with “Headroom Piano” it has no lyrics but it paints a vivid picture for the listener, and Alex G gets very creative with the instruments in this track too.
Overall, this new album from Alex G was a joyride to experience for the first time. With over a forty-four minute bunch of songs worth listening to show just how good of an artist Alex G is. From a new lover of Alex G I highly suggest this new record for anyone to enjoy.
