The single-day lineups for the 11th annual JAB Fest were announced this evening via Instagram. Once again, the fest is moving locations this year from the Lonestar Amphitheater to the South Plains Fairground and will add an additional stage. The split lineup also includes new lineup additions including Treaty Oak Revival, Kolby Cooper, who dropped an incredible album last month, and Waka Flocka Flame, which makes booking Surfaces feel on brand for the fest.
The lineup by day is linked below:
In my humble opinion, Saturday is going to be the day not to miss. Just the first five artists alone, Josh Abbott Band, Surfaces, Waka Flocka Flame, Kolby Cooper, and Kaitlin Butts, all are artists that I’m a huge fan of and can’t wait to see, especially Kaitlin Butts. I’ve been trying to see her for a very long time now and with the release of her latest album, what else can she do?, my excitement is through the roof.
And while they’re oddball picks and out of place for what Abbott usually books for the fest, I can’t wait to see Surfaces and Waka Flocka Flame for the second times. I got to see Surfaces at ACL Fest last October and, without a doubt, they played a top 5 set of the weekend. The amount of energy and great vibes that they brought were perfect for their mid-afternoon set. In the studio, Waka Flocka Flame is the exact opposite of Surfaces but he is just as great live. I caught his pre-game show last season in the Green Space and while I was originally making fun of the idea and saying, “I’m only going so I can hear Hard in the Paint live.” However, I was not expecting him to be as fun and as energetic as he was. Both are going to have great sets and I can’t wait for round two of seeing them. I’ve heard a lot of buzz on campus about Surfaces’ set and judging by the excitement, it’s going to be a magical evening.
That’s not to discount Friday though. Randy Rogers Band has consistently been one of my favorite live bands in this scene, especially due to fiddle player Brady Black’s fantastic fiddle player and charisma on stage. Casey Donahew will also be a great set and will be exciting for me personally as he’s one of the first artists I loved in this genre. Along with them, Corey Kent and Kylie Frey are exciting rising stars and will be artists you can say, “Hey, I saw them before they were big.”
Single-day tickets are on sale now at https://www.jabfest.com/. General admission single-day tickets are $35 and $40 for Friday and Saturday, respectively. Set times for each day will be revealed soon. Zachary Sorrels and I will be there both days with photo passes and complete coverage if you can’t make it out, but it would be really cool to see y’all out there!
