Experiencing the new album from Steve Lacy was an absolute thrill. The album gives the feeling of a hot summer night car ride with your best friends, but one is going through a breakup. We the listener go on this journey with Lacy through the emotions of him ending a relationship.
Songs like “Mercury” and “Sunshine” have the sound of an upbeat airy guitar-heavy track, but lyrically show the complexity of heartbreaking emotions the artist has gone through. Then there is “Static” and “Bad Habit” that just lays it on you, no hiding in uplifting guitar riffs. All emotion is shown throughout the lyrics, instruments, and beats. A personal favorite would have to be “Give You The World”, it perfectly wraps up the ending of the album with a slowed down beat accompanied by the soft harmines by Lacy. The album morphs between the genres of R&B and alternative with a pinch of psychedelic in the mix of the songs.
Lacy has been in the music scene for a while with his solo work or with other artists. By starting out in high school, he earned his first Grammy with his former band the Internet. Since then he has worked with the likes of J.Cole, Kendrick Lamar, Tyler the Creator, and Vampire Weekend. With that, he has perfected his craft and grown his sound from his past albums, which perfectly shows in this new release.
