Album Review – Embody – Basement Revolver

If there is one thing to spotlight on this album it would definitely be the patterns the songs follow. For an indie rock album, it can be very easy to have songs follow the same pattern and be repetitive. For this album, they managed to keep very similar patterns in most of their songs, but still keep me on my toes. The pattern they used was as follows: the song would start out pretty slow, slightly build before falling again, and then suddenly come in with a hard-hitting rock sound for the bridge, then either abruptly end or fade out. This is a pattern I see more and more in the newer indie music, and as great as a pattern is, it can get old. However each song I found myself saying “there is no way they will be able to do that with this song. ” And then they did. It wasn’t until the last song on the album that I was expecting the pattern, but then to my surprise, it never came and that was a nice touch for the end of the album.

This album had so many great secret gems I honestly cannot pick just one. As a drummer, I very much appreciated the way this album utilized one of the most overlooked aspects of the drum kit – turning off the snare on the snare drum. It is very simple yet very effective when trying to go for a less “edgy” rock sound. The fact that I could hear it so prominently also was very enjoyable.

Another great thing this album did was solidify my belief that when one is listening to an album for the first time, they must listen to it in order. The album had several transitions between songs that were smooth and made me double-check to see if it even moved on to the next track. There were some subtle ones as well that I had to go back and confirm, so that was a nice little detail.

In conclusion, this album is definitely a must-listen. I thoroughly enjoyed it and will be continuing to listen to the band, Basement Revolver for a while.
