At first, this album seemed like it was going to be very random. The first two songs were very abstract with off-beat chords and out-of-tune background instruments. Which, in my opinion, is a neat idea for one or two songs, but not an entire album. So when I started this album, (because I believe you MUST listen to an album for the first time in order.) I was skeptical as I did not really have much interest in listening to an entire album of abstract sounds.
However, I was pleasantly surprised in the fourth song, “Pompeii”, around the 38-second mark after the intro. A steady beat and smooth baseline kicked in and totally changed the vibe for the entire album. That is why I think it is the perfect song to be the title song. Because it sets the tone for most of the album and does so obviously.
Now I do not want to spoil much of the album, but I do want to note some of my favorite parts:
Track 5, “Harbor” had me at the intro. It had a steady beat and solid baseline that I just could not help but nod my head along to. I immediately added this to my own playlist. The chorus is catchy as well. It is simple, but the way it flows works amazingly.
Track 6, “Running Away” was my absolute favorite of the album. Of course, this was also an immediate playlist save, as was the rest of the album. In the chorus, there is a background brass line that even though they are just playing simple chords, it really adds to the entire song. It also has a light guitar solo/riff after that makes it just so groovy. Yes, I said groovy in a 2022 album review.
One final note is that the intros of each song seemed to get better and better as the album went on. While it does not seem like a big part of the song, as most popular songs are known for their choruses and/or beats, it definitely draws you in at first listen, and this album certainly accomplished that.
