Album Review: “Every Moment, Everything You Need” by Deserta

Picture this – you’re a film director looking for the perfect soundtrack to your new coming-of-age movie. You’ve scoured the internet for hours on end, but nothing seems to be quite right. Then, you stumble onto “Every Moment, Everything You Need” by Deserta. In the title is your answer, this is the album you’ve been searching for the whole time. Just enough melancholy and ethereal vibes offset by slight 80s effervescence, you know that this is what you’ve been searching for this entire time. This album, mostly instrumental with occasional vocal tracks, is full of so many surprises and each song carries its own weight in the whole of the album.

If you had to ask me to pick a favorite track from the album, I would say “Lost In The Weight” or “Goodbye Vista.” “Lost In The Weight” does exactly what any opening track should do, it sets the tone for the whole album and hooks you with its electronic drumbeats and groovy synths. Standing at just over 6 minutes long, it tells you everything you need to know about this album. The lyrics “take your time, slow down” are the first on the album and instantly put you in a calming headspace where you can just put your headphones on and slip away into the music, finding yourself lost in it until it’s over. The songs are similar enough on this album that it flows cohesively, but each brings in a new feeling. Some are more melancholic, some are more upbeat and hopeful, once again reinforcing the idea that this album was meant for a coming-of-age movie and, similarly, takes you on that journey as well. “Goodbye Vista” is one of the more upbeat songs on the album and, being the penultimate song, fills you with the same warmth and bittersweetness you feel as a movie comes to a close. Think Charlie standing up in the truck at the end of Perks of Being a Wallflower.

Every song in between these stands on its own as a great mix of emotions and powerful in different ways. Most songs on the album float between 4-6 minutes, allowing you to let your mind go blank and focus on the rhythmic drive of the guitars, synths, and drums coming together to create an ethereal and atmospheric energy. They go between themes of growing up, falling in love, losing yourself in your thoughts, and loneliness. This album is perfect for night drives, staring at your ceiling, and reflecting on your emotions. And, if you ever find yourself making a movie and struggling to find that perfect song, think back to this album and I’m sure it will strike a chord within you.
