I will be honest here, I had never listened to Animal Collective, so I did not quite know what to expect with this album. Recently I have been trying to expand my musical knowledge and genres I listen to, so I came into this with an open mind, but even having that did not give me a reason to listen to this album again.
I will say that the first three songs are interesting. They all start with fun little beats that are very syncopated and high-energy. But other than that, they all seemed similar. And I know that some music gurus think that all music on an album should sound similar if they’re on the same album (because that’s why they are on the album), but I think that it only works that way if you do it carefully and correctly. Even then there is always that one randomly different song and usually, it’s a decent hit. But in this album, the whole album just sounded like the same song, and it was repetitive. As I kept listening to the album, they all had a very similar syncopated beat to them, and at first, it was fun, but then I just got tired of it.
Now, don’t get me wrong, it is still a very well-produced album and has a lot of great moments, but they were thinly spread out to different songs, and the rest of those songs were kind of a drag to get through to the good parts. I am sure someone out there will love this album. There were some neat abstract instruments and sounds throughout that made it more unique than other albums I have heard. However, this one just was not for me.
