My last review of the semester and I couldn’t have picked a better album. It’s one of the shorter ones I’ve listened to but each song is something really special. This EP inspires feelings of nostalgia, provoking memories of driving around with friends, windows rolled down at sunset. This is the Australian duo’s first album and alludes to a promising career in dream pop.
My two favorite tracks on the album also happen to be the first two that appear, “Only One” and “Without U.” Both of these are those kinds of songs that you can’t be sad listening to, with upbeat synthesizers and percussion complimented by the lead singers alto vocals. Along with the nostalgic feelings of the album, songs like “Days in the Dark” reminisce on past relationships and not feeling like yourself, bringing on a more mellow feel to the album. “Wait” has a nice psychedelic funk feel to it, with vocals that sound very similar to fellow Australian artist Tame Impala. But underneath the layer of upbeat music, the lyrics lament over feeling like your life is passing you by and that you’re wasting your time, just wanting time to slow down for a little bit. The last track on the album, “Never Been More Sure” is quite a contrast from the preceding song, feeling absolutely certain in where you are and how you feel when you’re around the people you know care for you.
The whole album together I feel encapsulates the true coming-of-age experience. The highs and lows we feel as we get older – feeling like you’re on top of the world one minute and feeling completely lost the next – is all expressed in this 20-minute EP, which I find really impressive and just makes me like the album even more. If you’re like me and like to drive around listening to new music, I think this is the perfect album for you. It’s got a driving beat throughout the whole thing and allows you to sit and reminisce on life and all the great (and not-so-great) things about it that we all experience.
