Album Review: “True Love” by Hovvdy

Hovvdy is an appropriate name for an indie group based out of Austin, Texas. Their music is a laid-back, alternative mix that provides the perfect showcase for the lead singer’s accented voice. True Love is the fourth studio album since their debut, Taster in 2017. It’s a relaxing, indie album that finds a middle ground blend of acoustic guitar riffs and more electronically produced sounds

The album is a chill hang; an easy to listen to collection of music that all seem to be singing directly to someone the singer is in love with. The opening track, ‘Sometimes,’ is a lovely aperitif that sets the stage for the album you’re about to hear. You’re going to get a laid back album with a focus on producing unique instrumentation to provide texture to the singer’s lyrics and vocals. ‘True Love,’ the title track, also shows off one of the strengths of the album as a whole. The songwriter seems to love a great bridge that can take over the latter half of a song and provide a fun piece of music to sing along to. It couldn’t have been easy to choose many singles from the album, as a lot of the songs sound very similar, which is not really a criticism because it makes for a much more cohesive sounding experience as a whole.

One of the singles we did receive, “Around Again,” is a really pleasant little love song that kind of feels like the anthem of the album as a whole. “Blindsided”, another single, is my favorite song on the album, and once again, much like “True Love,” has a killer bridge to pair with its already excellent chorus.

“Hue” is a good song to listen to if you want a feel for the album because it provides a perfect balance between the album’s two strengths: acoustic guitar riffs and produced, electronic sounds. “Joy,” mixes it up by having a piano tune be the leading sound of the track, and “I Never Wanna Make You Sad” is a good closer as it showcases the band’s earnest lyricism that gives this album its feel. I would recommend giving this album a listen, especially as an entire complete package.
