Another Night on the Astral Plane is the musical debut of indie duo ORNAMENT AND CRIME. This EP also features the vocal stylings of Virginia Palms. This is a solid debut. A great foundation that also can be greatly improved upon for the years to come as they experiment and release more music.
These songs are longer songs. Unfortunately, this album doesn’t benefit from this because of the dragging of the instrumentals in the songs. In “The Only Living Girl in LA”, the lyrics don’t begin until about 1:30 into the song. The songs would get better if the instrumentals of the album were all cut by about or maybe more in some situations.
The EP has a smooth pop sound to it. It is mellow but also holds a bit of a fast tempo to increase the energy of the EP a little bit. The vocals are softer throughout the EP. The only time this changes is in “Bad Advice” where the pitch and strength of the vocal increases during the chorus.
Lyrically, this EP is good. The song “Give a Little Love” speaks on having compassion for others even when times appear to be tough. The chorus says, “give a little love, when we fight and fear so much, give a little love, it won’t hurt ya”. This lyric really showcases what this song is about.
In “The Only Living Girl in LA” the chorus shows independence and that the artist doesn’t need the company or help of somebody else, even if they are broken. The lyric “Don’t need no one to take me home, I like the way I feel on my own, and if I fall apart, the pieces of my heart and I, don’t need no one to feel whole”. This is the chorus, and it is by far the strongest part of the songs.
Overall, this is a good EP. It’s a quick listen that will only take about 20 minutes. Anybody who enjoys alternative music will really enjoy this one.
