Album Review: “Joshua” by “French 79”

Prior to listening to this album, the first thing I noticed was the artwork. It is simple and adds a three-dimensional feel to the cover. The cover is great in that it “fits” with the music on the album but does not steal the spotlight from it, the music gets to stand out and speaks for itself.

Now onto the music. This album has 13 songs and most of them are purely instrumental. There are only 4 songs that have lyrics, and in those songs the instruments still seem to come out louder than the singer. In this album’s case, this is okay since the focus is on the music not so much the words. The occasional lyrics are a breath of fresh air.

A couple of songs I want to highlight are “Code Zero” and “Louise and Thelma.” These songs have this 80s, techno vibe that I find hard to explain. I will recommend these two tracks as must listens from this album. Another song worth mentioning is “The Remedy”. It is the song that opens the album, and it really sets the tone for the following 45 minutes of listening.

Overall, the album is solid. Anybody who is into electronic, instrumental music will really dig this album and listeners who are new to the genre are sure to find a song or two that catches their attention.
