The music trio, Skegss, was formed in 2011 by Byron Bay, Australia natives, Toby Cregan on upright bass, Benjamin Reed on lead guitar, and Jonny Laneway on drums. The band has since toured both nationally and internationally, released several EP’s, and recently released their second studio album.
Their new album, Rehearsal, was released on March 26, 2021, as a follow-up to their 2018 debut album, My Own Mess. Skegss has also released three EP’s including, Skegss in 2015, 50 Push Ups For A Dollar in 2015, and Holiday Food in 2017.
Rehearsal features 13 songs and is about 42 minutes long, the album includes an alternative, surf music sound that the band is known for. Speaking of surf music, the opening song, “Down to Ride”, is an embodiment of what surfing music should be, it’s fun, catchy, and has an almost western beat to it. Then “Valhalla” kicks off with a bang, this is hands down my favorite song on the album, the guitar and drum solos at the beginning are absolutely sick in the best way possible. “Fantasizing” is about getting out of your own head but also acknowledging the importance of escaping reality and thinking of a better future. Next up is “Running From Nothing”, which also happens to be a favorite of mine on this album because the beat is so calming even if the song is about trying to not be haunted by your past. “Bush TV” is a nice mix of Skegss’ surf and alternative sound but either way is overall really invigorating. This is followed by a much more indie and western sound on “Picturesque Moment”, which features a much slower and gentle sound compared to the rest of the album so far. The song “Under the Thunder” immediately draws up mental images of a 90’s teen beach movie, it’s got a really laid-back and fun sound. “Sip of Wine” takes you by surprise because it has a much softer intro but when the beat picks up it’s so fun and it could easily fit into your road trip playlist. The song “Curse My Happiness” has a much more alternative 90’s sound to it, this song reminds me of The All-American Rejects if they added that surf sound to their music. “Wake Up” introduces a much softer sound than any of the other songs on this album, which creates a very noticeable shift in tone. Skegss starts to wrap up the album with “Fade Away” which has some really great vocals and pivotal beats by Jonny Laneway. The last song of the album is “Lucky”, it’s another one of my favorites on this album because I really love the western sound that they include of a harmonica and whistling along with it.
If you’re looking for an alternative band and want something with a little spice of something extra, be sure to check out Rehearsal by Skegss! Make sure to give their other album and some of their EP’s a listen as well.
