Alice Phoebe Lou, a South Africa native, is making a splash in the indie music community again by releasing her newest album, Glow, in the wake of a year’s worth of touring her last album. Lou has also previously released albums called Orbit in 2016 and Paper Castles in 2019. According to Lou the album, Glow, was born out of confronting living in 2020 and that means spending time alone. With this most recent album, Lou decided to finally broach the subject of love because she herself dealt with falling in love, heartache, and heartbreak, as well as the loss or change of friendships in the past year.
The album is made up of 12 songs featuring various sounds and tones that give the album its unique indie-folk sound. As Lou has stated, this album focuses on the universal feelings of love and heartbreak and these themes are strongly featured making this album perfect for anyone dealing with a breakup or anyone in love or even for anyone learning to love themselves.
The album kicks off with the song, Only When I, this is one of the songs that are centered around hauntingly beautiful but ultimately, mournful vocals. The song, Glow, comes in next to bring the beat and tone back to a more positive-sounding one. This is followed by Dusk, which has a very blues-sounding beat to it that is reminiscent of old love songs. Mother’s Eyes has a very dream-like sound that is prominent throughout the album but focuses more on self-discovery and self-love. How to Get out Of Love is a gentle indie song about heartbreak and heartache, definitely add this song to your breakup playlist. The song, Heavy//Light as Air, is whimsical and soft and it would be a great find for your study playlists. Dirty Mouth is my favorite song on this album because it’s fun and while its themes and lyrics focus on longing for love, the music as a whole is upbeat and exciting. The song, Lonely Crowd, has a great sound and is sure to be a hit for fans of Lofi Girl’s music (previously known as Chilled Cow). Lover//Over the Moon highlights Lou’s gorgeous voice and is really a ballad for lovers or those in love. Driveby brings the album back to a melancholy sound that balances out some of the themes surrounding love because as with love there should be both happy and sad tones. The second to last song on the album is Velvet Mood, which features a comforting and relaxing lullaby type sound that is shown continuously throughout the album. The last song, Lovesick, is my second favorite song on the album because while Lou is singing about her ache and longing for love it’s so upbeat it makes you regard falling in love as happy and adventurous.
Be sure to keep an eye out for this up-and-coming indie artist and if you have the time, check out some of her earlier albums as well. Many of the songs in this album would be great additions to playlists of various needs whether that be for a breakup, studying, or a relaxing bubble bath.
