Major Murphy is a Grand Rapids, Michigan-based band, comprised of four members including, Jacob Bullard, Jacki Warren, Brian Voortman, and Chad Houseman. The members came together to create their first try at an organized conceptual album through “Access”.
Hot on the heels of their previous debut album, “No. 1”, released in 2018, Major Murphy followed up with their second album in April 2021, “Access”. The band also gave fans a taste of their music through the release of two EP’s, “Future Release” in 2015 and “On & Off Again” in 2017, before ever releasing their first album.
This album kicks off with its namesake, the song “Access” feels like one of those songs you play the day of your graduation, the beat is epic. “Attention” follows, shifting the tone slightly to a fun alternative 90’s sound with a unique techno sound to the vocals. However, the song “In the Meantime”, continues the 90’s alternative sound, and it wonderfully upbeat and still somehow soft. “Unfazed” has an alluring sound, that is so at odds with the harmonic vocals and deep lyrics, all of which make this song wonderfully complex. Next up, “Real” adds a more sorrowful touch to the album and has a really cool shift in the middle of the song that brings the sound back to its upbeat pace. “Rainbow” could easily be in the twilight soundtrack, which a very unique sound that I personally love so it should come as no shock that this is my second favorite song on the album. The song “Tear It Apart” is lush with its guitar and this really adds to the depth of sound within the song. “Flower” is beautiful in that, many of the songs on this album focus on the theme of making a choice for how to live your life, and the song “Flower” feels like the epitome of this. Lastly, “Blind” is a sorrowful love song, that has a killer ballad, the lyrics in this song are some of my favorite on the album.
Give “Access” a listen if you’re interested in an alternative 90’s sound with serenading vocals that haunt you for a while afterward or if you’re looking for an up-and-coming alternative band be sure to keep your eye on Major Murphy.
