Eighteen-year-old singer/songwriter Hannah Jadagu is serving up pure indie bliss on her debut EP, What Is Going On? Raised in Mesquite, Texas, and currently based out of New York City, the self-taught DIY artist recorded her entire debut using only an iPhone 7.
Taking inspiration from Gen-Z beloved indie pop and rock acts such as Snail Mail, Dayglow, and Phoenix, Hannah Jadadgu has thirty minutes of indie goodness. She has bared her soul into this record, which features themes of teenage confusion, love, and the burnout of high school. The track “My Bones” also importantly discusses Jadagu’s experiences as a Black woman in the United States. ‘You could take my bones and place them home/ they won’t find out’ is a lyrical homage to the countless Black women who go missing and are murdered without due justice every day. It is a powerful opening statement to her EP.
The young songwriter has found much success so far, signing on to Sub Pop records, as well as being featured on many notable Spotify playlists (i.e. Lorem) and being featured on NPR’s New Music Friday. We here at the station cannot wait to see where she goes next.
