Grouplove is back with a bang, their newest album This Is This, marking their fifth studio album since their inception in 2009. The album encompasses that 90’s rock alternative sound that the band is known for, along with a playful beat that is sure to keep listeners on their toes and nodding along.
The album opens up with a bang as the song “Primetime” kicks off, this song, in particular, has that classic alternative sound that the band is known for. “This Is The End” has a softer alternative approach with banging beats accompanying it. The song, “Deadline” has an almost Techno beat that has a sort of 80’s feel to the song as though it could be in a coming-of-age movie where the protagonist takes back their life. “Scratch” brings back in that guitar squeal and intense beat that brings the alternative sound back around from the break “Deadline” created. Grouplove usually includes a few songs in their albums that have a soft sound and gentle beat, “Oxygen Swimming” is definitely one of those. The beat immediately picks back up in “Just What You Want”, a catchy punk song that makes you want to jump along and nod your head to the intense beat. The vocals for “Seagulls” have that classic raspy rock yelling of the lyrics that makes their band so lively and passionate. The last song on the album, “Shout” feels like one of those songs to play when you need music to get through a turning point in your life. This song resonates deeply, especially when taking into consideration the struggles that many have faced during this pandemic, “Shout” feels as though it was tailored for everyone who has suffered.
