This EP by the three-piece out of California is infused with a high-school-coming-of-age nostalgia to it that makes you want to immediately hop in your car and blast it with your windows down. Each track has a light and airy feel to it that leaves you with a “can’t sit still” feeling. It’s one that would be hard to be sad listening to.
The opening tracks “out 4 a breather,” and “if u want to !” set the tone for the whole EP, focusing on a rhythmic guitar riff and 80s synthesizers, as well as mystified vocals that add to the “floating” feeling that’s found in most of the songs. “nrvs again” takes on a slightly different tone, embracing all its new wave/80s sound. The final track “name & place” wraps up the EP with elements from all the other songs, tying it up in one nice, synthesized bow, while also adding its own flare and feeling to the album. The songs all carry similar elements but are constructed in a way that makes them each feel wholly unique.
Each song on this album brings something new, but all come together to create one cohesive sound that’s unlike anything I’ve heard in recent years. It combines sounds from the 80s, newer sounds like those comparable to Wallows, but with a little something extra that is entirely their own. These elements all work together to bring a fun and carefree feeling to the album as a whole, making it the perfect “summer sound” album.
