Album Review: Humor by Russell Louder

Finally, after releasing four consecutive singles every year since 2018, non-binary artist Russell Louder’s long-awaited debut album is here. Included in the album are all four singles, “Cost of Living”, “Light of the Moon”, “Hello Stranger”, and “Home”. Louder describes their music as being made for dancing and crying, this is the perfect way of summing up the tone of this album.

“Home” kicks off the album with an energetic beat and Louder’s hauntingly beautiful vocals. It is followed up immediately by “Cost of Living” which is a unique version of soft techno, this is definitely a song that could be played on the dancefloor. Much of the album features this jaunty, vagabond sound that continues through the songs, “Light of the Moon”, “Vow”, and “Outside”. While “Hello Stranger” also has these themes, it’s also a burst of life right in the center of the album to keep listeners on their toes. Then the album shifts as “Know the Game” comes on because there is a subtle change in their tone for this song. This shift is continued by the soft acoustic, techno mix “Lavender” as it calms and revitalizes listeners. The last song of the album “Go Now” is the most noticeably different in terms of sound and pace, Louder finishes off their first album with this gentle song.

Fans of Florence and the Machine who enjoy gorgeous vocals with deeper meanings over a vivacious beat should definitely give this album a listen, especially if you’re interested in what a Florence and the Machine meets techno mashup would sound like.
