Album of the Week: “Grecian Urn” by Adult Books

Adult Books is a three-piece post-punk group from Los Angeles, California. The group, led by vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Nick Winfrey, has been making music together since 2012.

Their latest release, Grecian Urn, creates a very interesting take on the post-punk genre. The band seems to have added an L.A. flair to the usually dark and brooding genre, fusing in elements of indie rock, and surf to create a new, lighter leg of post-punk goodness.

Many of the traditional elements of post-punk still remain, however, in the song structures, the upbeat tempos, and the coming-of-age lyrics that were so popular in the ’80s. One great track to exemplify this is “Apologies”, an upbeat break that sounds like it could have emerged as the feature song of a classic rom-com (in the best way).

Overall, on Grecian Urn, Adult Books have managed to create a well-rounded record that creates a great balance between nostalgia and innovation. It’s a very easy, pleasant listen that is sure to please any fans of acts like The Cure, New Order, and even modern artists like Current Joys and Black Marble. If you’re a fan of any of these artists that is looking to add some new tracks to your spring playlist, give this album a spin!
