Album of the Week: “Cheater” by Pom Poko

If you’re looking for a mid-quarantine pick-me-up, Cheater is the album for you. The sophomore LP from Norwegian punk/art rock band Pom Poko features gritty guitars, frantic drums, and off-kilter vocals that all come together perfectly to create an exilherating wall of sound that is sure to knock any rock-lover’s socks off.

Pom Poko has taken punk music and turned it on its head, adding a unique quirkiness that few other bands have ever been able to pull off. Songs like “Cheater”, “Like a Lady”, and “My Candidacy” are all explosive, warbly tracks that build into massive climaxes, sung over beautifully by lead vocalist Ragnhild Fangel. Just when you think you’ve got a break with “Danger Baby” or “Body Level”, Pom Poko manages to throw in a punch of noise that brings the energy right back up.

The gritty and ear-worm-y guitars featured on on Cheater are sure to delight any listener looking to add some spunk to their punk.

Favorite tracks: “Like A Lady”, “Danger Baby”, “Andy Go To School”.
