Album of the Week: “Acquainted With Night” by Lael Neale

Lael Neale is a singer/songwriter from rural Virginia, whose primary influences include the fields, the sun, and the sky. This is made apparent on her latest release, Acquainted With Night.

Recorded in the fleeting hours of the evening on a 4-track, this album presents itself a quiet soundtrack to feel sad to. Beautiful Omnichord progressions back Neale’s angelic voice and are wrapped up beautifully in the static that the 4-track provides. The result is a beautiful blend of folk, indie, and even a dash of classic country that makes this album feel like an undiscovered record from the sixties.

Neale’s lyrics on the album mostly focus on the mundane tasks that make up daily life. On the track “For No One For Now”, she sings, “There’s a light in the alley / There’s a breeze lifting curtains / Laughter from the street / It’s a new day, but I’m making toast in the kitchen / For no one, for now.” With these and all other lyrics on Acquainted With Night, Neale is able to flex her ability to draw out the wistful and melancholic emotions that fill our day-to-day life, even in these moments of solitude.

Acquainted With Night feels like waking up in a sunny flower field, like getting a warm hug, like watching an old film on a Super 8 camera, and like planting your feet on an old hardwood floor all at once.
