Album review: Remote by Wallows

Wallows, the three-piece indie pop group from Los Angeles, came in strong with their latest EP, Remote. This EP revisits their typical theme of covering some pretty deep lyrics with an irresistible beat and melody that you can’t help but dance to. With the majority of the members having girlfriends, and all being in their 20s, they are able to relate to the younger generation with their thoughts and worries about how their relationships are going and wondering if they may be messing it up.

The group really broke through with their single “Are You Bored Yet?” that seemed to strike a chord with the indie-pop/bedroom pop fanbase. This EP has a very similar feel all throughout that Wallows fans love and that new fans will enjoy as an introduction to their music. Songs like “Virtual Aerobics” and “Coastlines” address the long-distance relationship that many are familiar with, especially in these times. Behind all the struggles that accompany being so far apart, the songs’ melodies act as a silver lining, showing that it’s all worth it and that no matter what, you still love the person you’re with.

“Nobody Gets Me (Like You),” and “Wish Me Luck” were both accompanied by music videos that continue the story started with their single “OK.” Both, again, touch on the theme of relationships with the former being more upbeat and positive about a new relationship and how great it feels when you meet someone who truly understands you. “Wish Me Luck” is slightly more pessimistic, grappling with the worry of screwing things up in a relationship and reflecting on times when you feel that you’ve hurt someone, once again obscured by an extremely catchy rhythm and lots of synthesizers.

Overall, this is a stylistically, musically, and lyrically amazing album. Anyone who is a fan of New Order, COIN, or Declan McKenna would love this album, but it is most certainly not limited to that group. I absolutely recommend this EP to anyone looking for something new and energetic.
