Album Review: A Beautiful Revolution (Pt. 1) by Common

Common is an American rapper from Chicago. He has been making music since his 1992 debut album “Can I Borrow a Dollar?”. Since his debut album, Common has released eleven albums. His latest album “A Beautiful Revolution (Pt. 1)” is an amazing, beautiful album by Common. The first track (A Beautiful Revolution) Intro is a beautiful opening track that is more of a poem than a song with Jessie Cara Moore reading this speech that sets the tone for the album. Fallin’ is the next track and it is a very smooth track. The flow of Common’s rap is music to my ears and PJ vocals on the chorus are just delightful to listen to. The beat with the relaxed/laid back guitar strings playing in the background is smooth.

Say Peace is a more aggressive song with it sounding like more of a chant on the chorus by Songstress. With both Common and Black Thought rapping about black people’s struggles and how they are hopeful one-day peace will come. The outro falls more into this chant with the lyric “Tell me what they fightin’ for?” repeating. What Do You Say (Move It Baby) is another change with going back to smooth instead of aggressive like the last song. The flow of the song is smooth and again PJ on the chorus giving her delicate vocals makes this song a good listen.

Other songs like Courageous and A Riot In My Mind have features from Stevie Wonder and Lenny Kravitz who features help give the song more personality and help them stand out. Songs such as Don’t Forget Who You Are and A Place In This World are beautiful smooth songs again with PJ’s beautiful vocals and Common’s smooth rap lyrics are so easy to listen to. Finally, the Outro to this album is more of a speech than a song and it is a beautiful outro with piano playing to close out this album.

Common is an amazing soulful rapper that releases caring and endearing music. Each track on this album is smooth and soulful. Features from Black Thought, Lenny Kravitz, and Stevie Wonder help their songs feel special and PJ’s features throughout this album were treats to listen to. Common once again released another engaging and beautiful album.
